“There was a box of staples in my mailbox this morning! I was so excited! Thanks for organizing the school supply drive. We appreciate it so much!”, Teacher at Northwest after the January Supply Drive.
It still remains that the best hours of my week is when I get to go volunteer in my daughters Kindergarten class. The excitement of the students the first Monday after our supply drive in January was amazing! They all received new supplies and were so proud to show me what they had received. Do you remember the student I shared with you that had her broken pencils and a few crayons in a plastic baggie? She had her very own supply box filled with all the supplies she needed to be able to do her very best in class. During the rest of the year (so far), I have seen four more new students come into my daughter’s class and each of them received the needed school supplies to start right. This was happening in each of the classrooms at Southeast and Northwest. Because your congregation choose to give students in our community were blessed. Their needs were met and together we showed them they are important. Their future is important to us! And by doing this we showed them the kind of love that Jesus shows us all.
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ ‘Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The king will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, what ever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ – Matthew 25:35-40
We are getting ready for our July School Supply Drive to help students and teachers start off the 2015/2016 school year with the needed supplies. I have a couple different options to see which one works for your church.
First Option: For any church that would like to participate in the supply drive it will be the 2nd and 3rd Sundays in July (July 7 through July 19) I will drop the barrel off to your church on July 7 and pick it up after your services on July 19. We will be using the same barrels that we had during our drive last January. These barrels were decorated by students at Southeast and Northwest. If these dates do not work for your church you may pick any other dates that do work. Please just keep in mind that school registration is at the end of July and we are hoping to have all the supplies collected and sorted by then. We are planning on setting some supplies out at registration (at both schools) to have any family take what they need to help with their initial cost of school supplies. If you choose to do the drive on different dates please let me know what dates you are doing it so that we can get it on our flyer that we will place all around the community.
Second Option: For the summer drive we are also offering a VBS options. We know that many of you are gearing up for your summer Vacation Bible School Programs. If you are looking for a local organization to put your mission funds towards Serving Our Schools would be honored to have you choose us. We can still bring you a barrel if you choose to have kids bring supplies to donate. If you would prefer to have kids bring in an offering we are set up as an official non-for-profit and we do have a federal tax id number. If you need this number to donate please email me and I will get it to you. We have a bank account set up at First Merchants Bank in Decatur. Checks for donations should be made out to Serving Our Schools, Inc. They can be mailed to 245 Briarwood Trail, Decatur, IN 46733 or I can come pick them up after your VBS is finished. The best part about making Serving Our Schools your VBS mission is the students who donate are likely to receive the items right back!
We will also be making collection cans for box tops to be collected in during our supply drives. This is another great way you can help out the teachers at our local schools.
I am currently in touch with the principles at both schools to see what their immediate needs will be for the start of the school year. Once I know which churches are participating I will email a completed list of supply needs. I also plan to make flyers for church bulletins and to hang up. I will also email out those flyers once they are completed.
Reply back to this email if you will be participating in either option 1, option 2 or the box tops or all. You can get involved however it works best for you.
I also wanted to let you know that I am available for church visits. If you would like me to come to share a little of my story and vision of SOS I would be happy too. I would only take about 5 minutes of your staff meeting or service time. I can also set up a small table with more information about SOS and be available for any questions.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Thank you so much for partnering with Serving Our Schools. We couldn’t make the difference in our community without your partnership!
Serving Our School, President
